Queenstown: our top 5

It may be New Zealand’s adventure capital, but there’s much more to Queenstown than adrenalin. Set on stunning Lake Wakatipu with a view of the spectacular Remarkables, Queenstown is also a gourmet food and wine hub.

Here’s our list of the top 5 things to do:

The Shotover Jet:

If bungy jumping isn’t your thing (it’s not ours…) then head north for 30 minutes to the turquoise Shotover River to get your thrills. Here, the famous Shotover Jet will take you on an unforgettable ride. This adrenaline fuelled spin (yes, we’re talking 360 degrees here) through the canyons of the Shotover River is unforgettable. This is a boat trip not to miss

The Skyline Gondola:

This cable car is the gateway to spectacular views and a variety of adventure activities: the gravity fuelled luge speeds through 1.6km of turns and tunnels; the Gondola carries mountain bikes up and opens up 30 world-class downhill MTB trails, 30 kms of riding and 450 metres of vertical descent; and you can bungy at The Ledge. Alternatively, you can relax, (like we did), take in the awesome view and hike along the top or back down to town.

Tip:

It’s worth staying for sunset. The best viewing point is near the take off point for paragliders.

Brunch:

The Queenstown cafe scene is buzzing and the coffee is world class. You’ll be spoilt for choice, but you can’t miss out on a relaxing brunch in this town. We loved Vudu Cafe and Larder for all day dining…and coffee.

Tip:

If you want to try the iconic, stacked Fernburger, later in the day, don’t queue for an hour. Order a take-out and eat it overlooking the lake.

Ski-ing:

If you visit Queenstown in New Zealand’s Winter (mid-June to early October), you are onto a winner. Four major ski resorts are within striking distance and offer world class ski-ing and boarding:

The Remarkables (40 mins) good for beginners and freestylers

Coronet Peak (20 mins) the closest with fun terrain

Cardrona (1 hour) wide open spaces, great for beginners

Treble Cone (1.5 hours) for more experienced skiers with fun off piste.

Wanaka:

Queenstown is a brilliant base for day trips. Milford Sound – three and a half hours away – is incredibly popular. Our favourite is Wanaka, an hour and a half away via a mega scenic drive. This South Island lake (and town of the same name) is a great place to walk, hike, paddle board and kayak all against the backdrop of Mount Aspiring National Park – a World Heritage area. Wanaka is also a food and wine hub, with a delicious choice of places to eat. Out favourite was the Federal Diner for cool coffee and all day dining.

Tip:

The instagram favourite, #thatwanakatree can be found on Google maps.  Try to time your South Island visit with lupin season – late November to late January – the hundreds of lakeside blooms on display are unreal.
