Myanmar – the Gap Year pros and cons

Myanmar (previously known as Burma) is one of the few countries in East Asia where it’s still possible to have an authentic, non-touristy experience. Add to this, the world class temples and stunning scenery and it’s easy to see why Myanmar is rapidly growing in popularity. Here’s our pros and cons for gap year and adventure travellers:

Pros:

Home to 2 UNESCO heritage sites including Bagan – which rivals Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat in terms of scale and beauty.

The food is good and travel is budget friendly.

The people are genuinely friendly and welcoming. They will often approach to chat or help you and, unlike most countries, there is no agenda or scam intended.

Myanmar hasn’t yet seen mass tourism, so you are likely to have an authentic experience.

Cons:

There is a limited travel infrastructure and the four main sites (Yangon, Bagan, Inle Lake and Mandalay) are quite far apart.

Travel is primarily by night bus, which saves money, but is exhausting. Roads can be hazardous especially during the monsoon. You can fly internally, but it can be pricey and unreliable.

WiFi is limited and some areas, like Inle Lake, have few hotspots.

There are limited ATMs, so plan ahead with money. Be aware that some cards still don’t work – check yours in advance.

There are no go areas in Myanmar. Check current FCO travel advice in advance.

Healthcare is lower than Western standards, especially outside of Yangon and Mandalay. Plus, some pharmaceutical products are counterfeit.
