My top 5 places to visit in Vietnam – ranked:

1. Halong Bay

My favourite place in Vietnam. The Bay is dotted with 1,600 limestone islands and islets and can be super touristy, but it is such a natural wonder! The junk boats are super to stay on and the landscapes are breathtaking. I can’t wait to go back!

2. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Is where most people will be at during their trip to Vietnam at some point. It has French architecture, rooftop bars and a bustling night scene. Also a great place to eat out, it has many attractions like the War Remnants Museum and two great half day trips to Cu Chi tunnels and Cao Dai Temple

3. Hué

This imperial city is a must stop on the Vietnam trail. The citadel, emperors tombs and pagodas transport you back to another time.

4. Mekong Delta

It is possible to go by boat to Cambodia or just have a day trip to the floating villages of the Mekong Delta. Experience life on the water and do a homestay. A fantastic experience!

5. Hoi An

Hoi An is an exceptionally well-preserved town from the 15th century. Another UNESCO site, the old town has a famous Japanese bridge and is the place on the river where you see people letting off lanterns.

Mike:

I was a late traveller and didn’t start exploring the world until I left my corporate desk job when I was 27. Since then, I have visited 87 countries with my current target at 100. COVID has slowed this down, but I am determined in the next couple of years to reach it! I used to travel alone but now have my wife and daughter to keep me company. My favourite places are Peru, Indonesia and Brazil. I started mikesbucketlist to help people find quirky places that are not in the guidebooks and to make lists that are not found on the web. You will always find me travelling on a budget, enjoying hiking, eating local food and immersing myself in culture. Home is where the heart is, the world is where I live. Come check out my lists at @mikesbucketlist
