Sri Lanka – the Gap Year pros and cons

At last Sri Lanka is having its moment as a Gap Year and adventure travel destination. The island is packed with temples, wildlife and world class beaches, plus it serves some of the best food on the planet. 

Pros:

There’s stacks to see and do. Inland are UNESCO sites, safari parks, and mountains. The coast offers stunning beaches, surfing, diving, dolphin and whale watching.  

Due to the alternating monsoon season, somewhere in Sri Lanka is always hot and sunny. 

The people are incredibly friendly and the delicious food is cheap. 

 

Sri Lanka has a good and reliable transport system, although travel times through the mountainous interior can be slow.  

Cons:

The health care system is basic outside the major cities and dengue is widespread. 

Some beaches are prone to rip tides, so take local advice

The monsoon can cause road closures and landslides. 
 
Sexual harassment and drink spiking has been reported to be on the rise in the Southern beach areas.
