Puebla City is an ideal stop to break up the long journey between Mexico City and Oaxaca. But it’s also the perfect, and extremely affordable, place to take a little travel break, catch your breath, rejuvenate, work, and explore.

We didn’t mean to spend two weeks here, but we’re so bloody glad we did! And it’s now an extremely special place to us, since it’s where we celebrated Cora’s 2nd birthday.

Here’s our must do list. We’ve grouped them so you can see what’s close together.

Puebla Centro

  • Zócalo & Catedral de Puebla
  • Callejón de Los Sapos (Alley of the Frogs)
  • Mercado Parian (souvenirs)
  • Mercado de Sabores (for eating)
  • Try Cemitas (the best ones we had were in Mercado el Alto)
  • Casa de la Cultura (check for events or visit the oldest public library in the Americas)
  • Cívica 5 de Mayo (a beautiful park with so many museums that are all free on Sundays but closed on Mondays.
  • Museo de la Evolución Puebla (42peso, free on Sundays / closed on Monday. Download Spanish offline & use Google Translate camera for the information signs)
  • Teleferico Puebla Unreal views!
  • Estrella de Puebla

Cholula

  • From outside Mercado Sabores, take the 20minute bus (10 peso) or collectivo (8peso) to Cholula.
  • Climb up to the Santuario de la Virgen de los Remedios (great spot for a sunset!!)
  • Catch Los Voladores ‘The Flying Men’ in Parque Soria
  • Visit Zona Arqueológica de Cholula for the pyramid (85 peso).
  • Try Caldo Azteca in Gueros Restaurante near the Plaza de la Concordia.
  • Ramble. The streets are stunning and there’s always something on to enjoy

Tips:

Check out accommodation in Cholula before booking Puebla Centro (or do both!) Cholula is such a gorgeous town and much cheaper.

For anyone with young kids, you’ll want to stay in Cholula as it’s extremely family friendly with so many activities (parks, events, fun fairs, train rides, markets).
