Poland: the Gap Year pros and cons

Poland is a massive country with a serious amount of attractions. If it’s not on your list, add it now.

Pros:

Poland has a fascinating and rich history. It has over 500 castles and 14 cultural UNESCO sites.

Its architecture ranges from medieval to modernist. In city squares, gothic, baroque and renaissance buildings stand side by side.

It has several cosmopolitan, museum filled cities like Gdansk, Krakow, Wroclaw and Warsaw.

It’s cheap, easy to get to and easy to travel around.

You can join in the bar and nightclub scene on a budget.

Poland has a good level of healthcare.

The country is rich in nature: packed with lakes, forests and has skiable mountains. It also has a Baltic coast.

Cons:

Warsaw and Kraków are popular stag and hen night destinations, avoid the main tourist squares and drags for a more authentic and better value experience.

Beware of pick pocketing in tourist zones, at train stations and on sleeper trains.

There are rare cases of racially motivated attacks.

Poland’s main cities have excellent transport and facilities. More remote areas aren’t as developed, so travel and accommodation may be limited.

Outside of main cities, Polish is often the main language and communication may be difficult.

Vegetarians and vegans will have limited options outside of the main cities.

Polish winters can be extremely cold and unpredictable.
