Plitvice Lakes are the most stunning waterfalls in Croatia. The National Park is exceptionally beautiful with turquoise and emerald waters that really need to be seen and experienced.

Located half way between Zagreb and Zadar, Plitvice Lakes are an UNESCO World Heritage Site with 16 fascinating lakes and over 90 waterfalls.

Here’s my insider’s tips:

1. Overnight:

The Park deserves a whole day. So stay in the park overnight or in the local area which is also beautiful and certainly worth a visit.

2. Go off season:

It’s 3 times the cost during the Summer time particularly in July and August. June has a special promotional week and Spring and Autumn are much cheaper too.

Winter in Plitvice is also an amazing experience when the waterfalls are frozen.

Tip – avoid the weekends because of the crowds.

3. Pick the right trail:

There are several main trails each one a different length from 2 hours to 6 or 7. They are split between the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes and all take in the large main lake.

Two hours:

The easiest trail takes 2 hours and takes in the Lower Lakes. It’s the most majestic one right from the start where you’ll see all the instagram hotspots.

Starting with viewpoint at the entrance, it’s like entering a fairy-tale dream right up to the Great Waterfall. The incredible colours continue along the Lower Lakes. Lake Galovac ends the panorama of the Lower Lakes Canyon and leads to the boat port – all boat rides are included in the price.

Tip – the most amazing views can be seen on the trail above the Lower Lakes.

Four hours:

Choose a route that takes in the Lower and Upper Lakes. You will experience more gentle emerald colours and spectacular waterfalls. You will finish at the Upper Lakes where you can rent your own rowing boat.

Six hours:

The most desirable route is the longest route of 6 hours. It takes in all the highlights of turquoise lakes and adds in some of the most beautiful waterfalls. It’s also less crowded.

4. Don’t miss:

Čorkova Uvala a stunning forest of beech and spruce inside Plitvice.

Rastoke –  a lovely village one hour away from Plitvice with its own waterfalls.

Tip – you can swim here. Swimming is forbidden in Plitvice National Park.
