Jordan: the Gap Year pros and cons

Jordan is an exceptional country. One of our favourites. Home to Wadi Rum, Petra and world class diving, everyone should try and visit once.

However, there are a few downsides to consider when spending a significant amount of time in Jordan. Here’s our pros and cons:

Pros:

Archeology – Jordan has an astonishing history with phenomenal sites like Petra and Jerash. It’s home to 6 UNESCO heritage sites.

Natural wonders – don’t miss the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum and the Red Sea’s excellent diving.

Hospitality – the people are exceptionally helpful and friendly.

Food – the fresh produce and local dishes are delicious and healthy.

Jordan is relatively free of political instability.

English is widely spoken.

Geographically, Jordan borders Egypt and Israel, both of which are similarly packed with historic sights.

Cons:

Jordan is expensive.

Poor infrastructure. Public transport is limited and often at inconvenient times.

Outside of Amman, medical care of a western standard is limited.

Outside of Amman, you won’t see many local women. We travelled as a single female and didn’t find this a problem experiencing nothing but respect. But it’s something to be aware of, as you can often be the only women in a cafe etc.

Women need to dress respectfully and cover arms, legs and the nape of the neck and should take care in remote areas as harassment does occur.

Even though it’s a very safe country, there’s a noticeable police and army presence especially near borders. The FCO advise avoiding the region round the Syrian border.
