Italy: the Gap Year pros and cons

If we were restricted to only visiting one country in the world for the rest of our lives, we would pick Italy. It has it all: incredible cities, art, architecture, archaeology, dramatic mountains, stunning beaches, amazing food and the best ice-cream.

Here’s our gap year and adventure travel pros and cons:

Pros:

It has 55 UNESCO heritage sites and is home to Rome, Florence and Venice.

The food is incredible in every region – pasta, pizza, pastries and gelato.

The healthcare system is one of the best in the world.

Italy has a good public transport system.

It has many varied, and beautiful, regions.

It has great ski-ing and adventure tourism activities.

The people are welcoming and fun.

Cons:

The famous cities (Rome, Florence and Venice) can be expensive.

Pick-pocketing can happen  – beware the area around the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and other tourist hotspots for this. Groups regularly distract tourists then steal.

The streets can be littered and dirty.

It has high unemployment, so getting a short term job isn’t easy.

Women still attract stares and sexist comments.
