Istanbul: our top 5

Istanbul is unique. It’s the only city in the world to bridge two continents – Europe and Asia on opposite sides of the  Straits of Bosphorus. It’s been the capital of 2 empires – the Christian Byzantine and the Ottoman. Not only is it packed with history, but it’s also modern, exciting and stunning.

We love the city, here’s our top 5 must sees:

Hagia Sophia:

The massive, architecturally innovative Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 when Emperor Justinian ordered its construction. Mehmet the Conqueror converted it to a mosque in 1453 and then Hagia Sophia became a museum under Atatürk in 1935. It’s packed with history and religious heritage and is extraordinarily beautiful.

Tip – try to visit in the morning to see the interior in the best light.

The Blue Mosque:

The six minarets of Sultanahmet Camii (or the Blue Mosque) dominate the skyline of Istanbul. This vast, domed and beautifully proportioned mosque is magnificent. The courtyard is the largest in an Ottoman mosque and dates back to Sultan Ahmet I (1603–17). Inside, the spacious prayer area is dramatically lit by 260 windows. The mosque gets it name from the thousands of spectacular blue İznik tiles decorating the walls.

Tip – women need to wear a headscarf.

The Basilica Cistern:

The Basilica Cistern is a Byzantine underground reservoir built in 532 for Emperor Justinian. It has 336 carved columns, salvaged from temples, and they reflect in the atmospheric clear water. The scale and symmetry of the cistern is breath taking.

Tip – visit on a hot day to cool off on the raised walkways.

The Grand Bazaar:

Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar is the largest covered market in the world. It covers a massive 30,700 square metre and has  60 streets and 4,000 shops. The historical centre dates back to 1461 and it is structured around specialised areas: jewellery, carpets, mirrors etc. It’s architecturally impressive, atmospheric and a delight to shop in – although you have to enjoy haggling!

Tip – if you enjoy the Grand Bazaar, check out the Spice Bazaar.

Topkapi Palace:

The exotic Topkapi Palace dates from 1478 and was home to revelling sultans, courtiers and a harem for centuries before becoming a museum. Its history is   intriguing and the palace is home to ornate courtyards, fountains, a jewel packed treasury, pavilions and the large harem.

Tip – book online to avoid queues and get your separate Harem ticket as soon as you can because daily numbers are limited.
