France: the Gap Year pros and cons

France (or more specifically Paris) tops many travellers bucket lists. It might not be the “coolest” country to visit in the 21st century, but it shouldn’t be ignored on any European tour.

Here’s our pros and cons for gap year and adventure travel in France:

Pros:

It’s home to Paris – packed with art, sights, culture and cafes and a famous tower!

The countryside is amazing: from the spectacular Alps to the gentle river shores of the Loire Valley; the beaches of the south and the dramatic central gorges. The landscape is varied and beautiful.

The romantic cafe culture of market squares, gastro cafes, wine and cheese still exists and is easy to tap into.

France has phenomenal UNESCO sites including: cathedrals, chateaux and Roman amphitheatres, plus whole towns like the unique medieval Carcassonne.

Each region has its own flavour and cuisine.

In terms of slopes, it’s probably got the best ski resorts in the world.

It’ s easy to cross into France’s many neighbouring countries: Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Monaco.

Cons:

It can be very expensive – especially in Paris and on the south coast.

The cities can feel crowded and are often dirty.

You will be at risk of mugging and pick pocketing, especially in certain areas of Paris like the Gare Du Nord.

There is a high terrorism risk.

Political unrest is common – keep your eye on local news if protests start up.
