Estonia: the Gap Year pros and cons

Estonia packs a punch. This small Baltic nation has history, nature and culture in bucketloads.

Put it on your list.

Pros:

Compared to most of Europe it’s highly affordable.

Estonia is safe and has a good infrastructure. Internal travel is efficient and cheap.

It’s easy to travel onto Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Sweden.

It’s perfect for an outdoor lifestyle. Estonia is 50% forest, plus it’s home to ancient bogs, 2000 islands and pristine beaches.

Camping is free, the air is clean and there’s up to 20 hours of light in the Summer.

Tallinn is a gem of a medieval city that can hold its own with other European capitals. The old city is a UNESCO heritage site.

Tallinn is a great base for digital nomads and has a thriving IT sector.

Estonia has good healthcare.

Cons:

Tallinn can get overcrowded in the Summer.

Tallinn is also a victim of stag party weekends, as it’s cheap to drink and eat. The rest of the country remains unspoilt.

The Winter is cold and dark with only 4 or 5 hours of sunlight.

It’s not easy to get to from non-neighbouring countries.
