Egypt: travelling safely – group or solo?

Solo travel pros:

In terms of safety – the government of Egypt has taken measures to keep tourist sites secure for all travellers -solo or group.

Egyptian people are very helpful and will help you out.

You have the freedom to organise your own time around your interests and change plans en route.

You can always book mini tours. For example, we booked a short felucca cruise and a day trip to the Saqqara pyramids.

You experience more local life.

You don’t feel herded.

Tips:

To avoid unwanted attention – cover up, wear sunglasses and a head scarf.

Be scam savvy.

Be aware of any changing political situations – ask in your hotel if there’s anything you need to be aware of.

Group travel pros:

There’s a huge selection of tours from large to small and with different levels of adventure and luxury.

You usually have a police escort or security on a guided tour – check this in advance.

Due to the guides, you often learn more on a tour and can ask questions.

Tours have the advantage of local knowledge in terms of safety and scams.

Tours are less hassle.

You can meet fellow minded travellers.

It’s often possible to cover more ground in a tour.

Tips:

Make sure a certified egyptologist is part of the tour.

Research ahead and read reviews before you book your tour company.
