Bulgaria: the Gap Year pros and cons

Pros:

It’s cheap. Food, drink and accommodation are very affordable.

Bulgaria has many attractions: historical sites, immense natural beauty, skiable mountains, the Black Sea Coast and fascinating architecture. It’s home to a total of 10 UNESCO Heritage Sites.

It has beautiful cities: Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo.

Bulgaria has a long history of intersecting civilisations. This is reflected in its rich culture, food and traditions.

With cheap internal and external travel, it is a brilliant base to explore neighbouring countries –  Turkey, Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia and Romania.

Bulgarians are very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

Bulgaria has a low standard of living and high poverty.

Remote areas aren’t multi-cultural. You may encounter racism outside the main cities.

Driving can be dangerous and roads are often not in good condition.

Many locals only speak Bulgarian, so communication can be more difficult than in other European countries.

You may find the signs in Cyrillic language confusing.

Public attitudes to LGBT+ are less tolerant than many countries.

Beware of tourist scams and pickpocketing in the main Black Sea resorts.
