Sydney: for free

Landmark studded Sydney is most visitors’ gateway to the natural wonders of Australia. Its skyline is spectacular and its harbour dazzles. Luckily, much of this cosmopolitan city can be enjoyed for on a budget. Here’s our guide to Sydney for free:

Landmarks:

The World Heritage listed Sydney Opera House is free to visit (guided tours cost). Explore the foyers, wander the perimeter or sit on the steps to take in the view of Jørn Utzon’s masterpiece.

Sydney’s Harbour Bridge is almost as iconic. You can splash out and do the Bridge Climb, but we suggest the less vertigo inducing 1.15 km walk across the “coat hanger’s” pedestrian walkway.

Tip:

We suggest crossing from the north side, to have the Opera House in view as you cross.

Beaches:

Sydney is home to over a 100 beaches around the harbour and along the coast, most are beautiful. Here’s our pick of must see free beaches:

Bondi Beach as one of the world’s most famous beaches, you can’t miss Bondi. It’s 100 metres wide and 1 kilometre long, so there’s enough room for the throngs of locals and tourists. Go for fun and the buzz.

Manly Beach is a 30 minute ferry ride away (worth taking for the views) and spectacular. Go for the laid back vibe and world class surfing.

Milk Beach is a small, secluded beach in front of Strictland House facing Sydney harbour. Go for peace, quiet and spectacular views of the harbour’s landmarks.

Tip:

If you’d rather swim in a pool, Sydney has 30 plus ocean pools. We love the free Bronte Baths. Built in 1887, they overlook another Sydney classic – Bronte Beach.

Art galleries and museums:

Sydney has an impressive collection of free museums and galleries. The NSW Art Gallery has a huge collection of Aboriginal, Australian, Asian and European Art. If you prefer modern art, check out the Museum of Contemporary Art – the MCA

Sydney’s epic Australian Museum, home to 21 million specimens of natural and cultural objects, is also free.

Tip:

Don’t miss the dinosaurs!

Tours and walks:

Sydney is home to I’m Free Tours. The tours by locals are packed with insider tips on the city. We suggest a small tip.

Our top Sydney activity is the Bondi to Coogee walk. This beautiful, coastal walk covers some of Sydney’s most iconic beaches. The full length is 6 kilometres, but you can do shorter sections – our favourite is Bondi to Bronte.

Tips:

Check out the annual free Sculpture by the Sea exhibitions along the route and refuel at one of Bronte’s top notch cafes at the end of your walk.
