Scotland is home to magnificent mountains, stunning lochs (lakes), white sand beaches and cool, cultural cities.
Choosing 5 must sees was tough, but these are our favourites:
Edinburgh:
We think Edinburgh is the most staggeringly beautiful city in the world. It has almost 5000 listed buildings and is a UNESCO heritage site. You could easily spend a week there comparing the multi-levelled, cobbled Old Town to the elegant Georgian New Town; or deciding which hill has the most spectacular view of the city – Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill?. Plus, it’s got a world class castle… Don’t miss any of these attractions and: The National Museum of Scotland, the National Gallery, and The Georgian House for a trip back in time.
Tip – Edinburgh also hosts the Fringe Festival each August, the world’s most famous art’s festival. Time your visit to coincide if you can.
Glasgow:
It may lack Edinburgh’s jaw dropping beauty, but Glasgow has a rugged cool and buzzing vibe that Edinburgh lacks. It’s also architecturally magnificent (from long rows of sandstones terraces to the Art Nouveau delights of Charles Rennie Mackintosh). Glasgow’s museums easily rival Edinburgh. Don’t miss: The Burrell Collection – combine a world class art collection with Highland cows in Pollok Park; The Kelvingrove a mammoth Victorian masterpiece with a collection ranging from mummies to Mackintosh; the award winning Riverside Museum for all things transport; and the spectacular Glasgow Science Centre. There are stacks of historical sights, but we love anything and everything Mackintosh.
Mull:
Scotland’s islands are all amazing. Skye is probably the most spectacular, but as it is always overcrowded we suggest Mull. This Hebridean island has a multitude of white sand beaches (we love remote Langamull, the even more remote Traigh Ghael – a 2 hour hike, and the easily accessible Calgary Beach). Mull’s multi-coloured, 18th century fishing port of Tobermory should also be on your list – make sure you eat at the celebrated fish and chip van on the harbour front. Finally, don’t miss a boat trip to nearby Staffa with its remarkable basalt cliff formations and the astounding Fingal’s Cave.
Eilean Donan Castle:
The iconic 13th century Eilean Donan Castle is Scotland’s most photographed monument and an instagram star. We love its remarkable Highland’s location. Set on the Kyle of Lochailsh, Eilean Donan has its own island where three sea lochs meet. Once you’ve visited the castle, the surrounding countryside overlooking Skye is equally awesome.
Luskentyre Beach:
Remote Luskentyre Beach on the Outer Hebrides island of Harris is spectacular. Often rating in the list of world’s best beaches, this remote white sand gem dazzles. It has crystal clear waters in shifting shades of turquoise and stunning mountain views.
Tip: Scotland does suffer from severe midge outbreaks, especially in the Highlands during the Summer. They aren’t dangerous, but can be irritating. If your trip is flexible, it’s worth checking ahead with the midge forecast site.
