Costa Rica: travel tips

Costa Rica has two stunning coast lines, volcanoes, rainforests and exotic wildlife. It also has significant rainfall and is expensive by Latin American standards. Make sure you plan ahead.

Here’s our Costa Rica travel tips:

The weather:

Costa Rica has a lot of rain and unpredictable weather. The dry season runs from mid-November to April. The wet season runs from May to mid-November. September and October have the heaviest rain making some roads impassible. The Caribbean Coast has rainfall year round. Our tip is to use dry bags.  Finally, it is a lot cooler at altitude in the mountainous centre.

The high season:

Costa Rica is increasingly popular with Americans flying south for the Winter and Easter. Avoid these busy times for cheaper prices, or if you need to travel then plan well ahead as accommodation gets booked up.

The cost:

Costa Rica is not cheap. Hotels can cost the same as the US. We suggest eating in local sodas (family run restaurants), travelling in the rainy season and checking out The Caribbean Coast which is cheaper.

The roads:

Costa Rica has basic roads. Major ones are paved, but many are dirt tracks with potholes. Choose a 4 x 4 if you are hiring a car and factor in heavy rain and erratic driving.

Theft:

Although Costs Rica is a safe place to visit, pickpocketing and theft does occur. Use common sense and be careful in busy places like markets and bus stations. Hide items in cars and try and park in a guarded car park if your car is packed.
