Costa Rica: my top 10 by @Mikesbucketlist

Mike @mikesbucketlist.

Costa Rica really is the garden of Eden and probably the greenest country in the world, so make sure you put these on your list.

Here’s my top 10 things to do in Costa Rica:

Outdoor adventure:

As an outdoor adventure playground, many eco-tours will take you zip lining, rappelling and canyoning in the forests. There is something for everyone.

Turtle watching:

Is there anything more magical than experiencing Turtles laying their eggs on Tortuguero Beach in the moonlight and watching them head back out to sea?

Stay in an eco-lodge:

No trip to Costa Rica is complete without spending time in your own lodge with private infinity pool and views of the forests and volcanos.

Experience the wildlife:

Apart from going on an African safari, you may experience the most wildlife you have ever seen in Costa Rica. If you don’t experience everything you want in the wild, head to the many zoos, sanctuaries and rescue centres to see the famous sloths, hummingbirds, frogs, elusive jaguar and rare quetzal.

Hike a volcano:

There are some real beauties in Costa Rica, due to their shapes and lush colour. So check out the lava at Volcan Arenal or if hiking isn’t your thing, the caldera Volcan Poas for easy viewing.

Monteverde cloud forest:

One of the world’s great forests. Check out its hanging bridges above the canopy, night walk and outdoor adventures mentioned earlier. Don’t expect too much wildlife though.

Manuel Antonio National Park and beaches:

As a costal park, there are many hiking trails to its beaches. You can also expect to see a good amount of wildlife including squirrel monkeys.

La Fortuna:

Close to San Jose this may be your first stop including a waterfall, hot springs and coffee plantations. Volcan Arenal will be watching you!

Horse riding:

Experience sabanero culture by donning a cowboy hat and saddling back while strolling a beach.

Get wet:

There are many surfing destinations and schools on both coasts including Jaco and Santa Teresa as well as snorkelling and dive sites.

Mike:

I was a late traveller and didn’t start exploring the world until I left my corporate desk job when I was 27. Since then, I have visited 87 countries with my current target at 100. COVID has slowed this down, but I am determined in the next couple of years to reach it! I used to travel alone but now have my wife and daughter to keep me company. My favourite places are Peru, Indonesia and Brazil. I started mikesbucketlist to help people find quirky places that are not in the guidebooks and to make lists that are not found on the web. You will always find me travelling on a budget, enjoying hiking, eating local food and immersing myself in culture. Home is where the heart is, the world is where I live. Come check out my lists at @mikesbucketlistand my travel guides here
