Camp Counsellor – the lowdown

Job:

Looking after children at a residential kids’ camp as either a general counsellor or in a specific activity. 

Skills:

You will need to like kids, be extrovert, responsible and full of energy. 

For an activity specialist role, you will need to have relevant experience and often qualifications eg. RYA or lifesaving etc.

Pros:

It’s a cheap way to spend Summer in the States or Canada. 
 
You will be immersed in a new culture and lifestyle. 
 
 
 
Earn a salary alongside free food and accommodation. 
 
Being outdoors and active all day. 
 
Genuine community with a family feel. 

 

Cons:

It’s hard work, you are on duty pretty much 24/7.

You will need to deal with the less rewarding aspects like bullying, kids who are homesick or uncooperative.

The wages are low considering the hours.
 
3 months is a long time to live closely with kids, it can get very claustrophobic.
