Foodies are spoilt for choice in Athens. From Michelin starred eateries to good value tavernas, this city has got it all … and often with a view of the Acropolis.
If you want to treat yourself on a budget – you can’t go wrong with the following:
The Central Market
Go for the atmosphere and the produce. The central market is rammed with delicious stalls (meat, fish, vegetables and spices), many of which offer cheap eats or perfect picnic fodder. Ipeiros in the meat market offers wholesome soups and stews. Or try Volvi for fresh souvlaki. And finally, for a caffeine hit there’s no where better than Mokka for tradtional Greek coffee and pastries.
Ergon House
Ta Karamanlidika Tou Fani
Karamanlidika is probably the most atmospheric place to eat in Athens. It’s certainly the most authentic. Set on the iconic spice street Evripidou, it’s part deli part casual restaurant. There’s lots of veggie options, but it’s meat focussed. Feast on a wide range of dishes including the pastirma (air-dried cured beef) or chose from some of the best produce in Greece in the deli section.
Feyrouz
Not strictly Greek, but Levantine, Feyrouz is an unmissable street food destination in central Athens . Try out the lahmatzun, vegetarian pies, the soups and the salads.
Krinos
Finally, you have to sample something sweet. You can’t leave Athens without indulging in some loukoumades – Greek doughnuts.
We love the original, Krinos, established in 1923 and with the cafe still occupying a neo-classical building with a grand seating area. The portions are large and their signature mix of honey syrup, cinnamon and nuts is hard to beat.
