How to spend free time near Euston and King’s Cross St Pancras

Staying in the area, missed a train or just keen to explore some of the less busy gems in London? Here’s our guide to must sees in within 5 to 10 minutes walk from Euston and King’s Cross St Pancras.

The British Library

The magnificent British Library is free to visit and home to a collection of more than 170 million items. Check out the Sir John Ritblat Gallery for some of the most important literary and historical documents in the world. Then explore the Treasures Room for Medieval manuscripts including illuminated gospels and the 1455 Gutenburg Bible. From Shakespeare to Monty Python manuscripts, you will find it here. Tours available.

The Wellcome Collection

Virtually facing Euston is The Wellcome Collection – another free museum and library focusing on science and health. The Collection is perfect for popping in – see a quick exhibition and grab a coffee in the on site cafe.

Drummond St

This unassuming street next to Euston is home to some of the capital’s best South Indian food. The iconic Diwana Bhel Poori House is London’s first bhel poori house and it’s still serving, cheap delicious vegetarian curries. If you’re after meat, check out Chutney’s nearby. All the restaurants lining the street are good value and authentic, as are the sweet houses and spice shops.

Platform 9 and 3/4

If you’re a Harry Potter fan than you can’t miss this photo opportunity in King’s Cross Station. Although it looks nothing like the platform in the films, be prepared to queue. You’ll find it next to the Harry Potter Shop.

UCL Museums

University College London is not only a world class University but home to several small, but impressive museums and collections – check out the website at UCL Museums and Collections. They are all free with varied visiting times.

Our favourites are the Petrie Museum for Egyptian Archaeology and the Grant Museum of Zoology. There’s also an Art museum and an impressive Pathology collection.

Coal Drop’s Yard

A short walk north of King’s Cross and St Pancras stations is a cool complex of shops, cafes and restaurants. With beautiful architecture, plazas, fountains, gardens and a canal it’s a lovely place to spend spare time in.

St Pancras Hotel

This astonishing gothic landmark built in 1968 is worth a visit in its own right. Join a tour at the weekend, or have a drink in the Gothic Bar and get a sneak peek at the iconic staircase.
