Lithuania: the Gap Year pros and cons

We loved Lithuania – it’s packed with historical gems and outstanding nature. Go now before it gets spoilt.  Here’s our pros and cons.

Pros

Lithuania is rich in history and culture – both Vilnius and Kaunas are vibrant, cool cites with outstanding architecture.

Lithuania has so much pristine nature – the Baltic coast, clear lakes, woodlands and the forests of Aukštaitija National Park.

It’s a manageable size with great transport and an easy place to explore nearby countries like Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Sweden from.

Exceptional internet connectivity makes it ideal for digital nomads.

Great coffee/cafe culture. Even the chains like Caffeine are outstanding.

Lithuania is relatively cheap compared to most of Europe.

The country has good healthcare.

Cons

Drink spiking has been known in Vilnius and at festivals. Beware.

Rural areas may not be accepting of LGBTI+ travellers and conservative in outlook.

Beware of accidentally straying into Russian territory whilst exploring the UNESCO listed Curonian Spit

Whilst younger Lithuanians are very friendly and often fluent in English, you will find it more difficult to communicate with older Lithuanians.

Lithuania has very harsh Winters.
