Bosnia: the Gap Year pros and cons

For many, Bosnia – Herzegovina still suffers from an image problem. The country is sadly still associated with the civil war of the 1990s and some remnants remain visible. However, we think you should visit. Bosnia is worth so much more than a day trip from its more popular neighbours. It has history and nature in abundance.

Here’s our pros and cons:

Pros:

Bosnia has world class historical sites with 5 UNESCO Heritage sites  including the iconic bridge in Mostar.

It’s rich in nature – especially forest, mountains, gorges, clear blue rivers, waterfalls and boasts 23km of Med coastline.

Bosnia has excellent fresh food. Don’t miss the traditional coffee culture.

The country is very cheap by European standards.

The people are warm, welcoming and helpful.

Bosnia has medieval castles, Ottoman architecture and UNESCO listed tombs.

Outside of the coach day trip visits to Sarajevo and Mostar, both retain their enticing character – make the most of early morning and early evening.

It’s well connected to and near Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia – therefore easy to combine several fascinating countries.

Cons:

Keep your eyes on the political situation as protests could occur and acts of terrorism remain a risk.

There is a risk of pick pocketing and bag snatching in Sarajevo.

Outside of the tourist areas, English isn’t widely spoken.

Medical and dental care outside of Sarajevo is limited.

As Bosnia is predominately Muslim, Female travellers should dress respectfully.

In some areas the LGBT+ community can be discriminated against.

If you’re in the country for more than 72 hours you need to register yourself at a local police station – which can be inconvenient.
